— SHICHI-GO-SAN FAQ —

Shichi-Go-San: frequently asked questions

Q.Should we celebrate at the traditional age (kazoedoshi) or the actual age?

A.Either is fine. These days most families go by the child’s actual age, though some choose the traditional count so that siblings can celebrate together. Please choose what suits your child’s build and stamina on the day — we are happy to advise.

Q.Can we do the photo shoot and the shrine visit on the same day?

A.Yes. Most families get ready at the salon, walk 1–2 minutes to Takahatasan Fudoson, have their photos taken on the grounds and the approach, and go straight on to their prayers. We look after your bags during the shoot, so you can visit hands-free.

Q.Can you start getting us ready early in the morning?

A.Yes. With a reservation, we can start as early as 4 a.m. We work backwards from your prayer service or photo session, so even the first prayers of the day are no problem. Just tell us the time you need to be ready. A ¥3,000 early-start fee applies for a start before 7 a.m., and ¥5,000 before 5 a.m.

Q.Is it better to shoot in advance, or on the day of the visit?

A.Both work well. Some families are photographed on the day of their November visit; others come in September or October for an unhurried pre-shoot. Weekends in October and November fill up early, so please get in touch once your date is set.

Q.My three-year-old may not sit still. Is that all right?

A.Three-year-olds wear the hifu vest, and the dressing itself takes only a short time. We allow about an hour or more for hair, make-up and dressing, and we go at your child’s pace with breaks whenever they need one. We can also talk about the best start time.

Q.Can we bring our own kimono?

A.Yes. There’s no charge for a kimono you bring yourself — you only pay for preparation and photography (age 7 ¥67,000 / age 5 ¥57,000 / age 3 ¥62,000). Kimono handed down in the family are very welcome. We check the fit beforehand by keeping the kimono with us for a few days, free of charge. If shoulder tucks, waist tucks, or sewing on a han-eri collar are needed, each is ¥2,000 — we include this in the estimate when we check the fit, so there is nothing extra to pay on the day.

Q.Can we rent a kimono and be dressed without a photo shoot?

A.Yes — this is our Shrine-visit rental, with no photography (age 7 pure silk Rank A ¥80,000 / Rank B ¥70,000 / Rank C ¥47,000; age 3 pure silk ¥42,000). Please return the kimono to the salon after your visit. If you already have your own kimono, preparation alone is also available (age 7 ¥15,000 / age 5 ¥5,000 / age 3 ¥10,000). If you already have a photographer booked, we can also attend on the day to fix any disarray in the kimono (¥5,000 per hour).

Q.Can brothers and sisters be photographed too?

A.Yes. Photography is booked once, so a second child does not double the photography fee — add ¥10,000 for each additional child being celebrated, plus that child’s own preparation and kimono. Age 7 (own kimono) with age 3 (silk rental), for example, comes to ¥109,000. We photograph the children together, and each one on their own.

Q.How many photos do we receive?

A.If you choose photography, 50 or more retouched photos are included, delivered as data. You are free to print them at home or share them with family.

Q.What happens if it rains?

A.Light rain can make lovely photographs with an umbrella. In heavy rain we can move the shoot indoors at the salon, or change the date subject to availability — let us decide together on the day.

Q.Is there a deposit or a cancellation fee?

A.Plans that include photography take a ¥10,000 deposit at booking, which goes towards your total on the day. If your child has a fever or is unwell, we postpone rather than cancel, and no cancellation fee applies — we simply set a new date to suit the photographer’s availability. Otherwise, cancellation is free up to 8 days before; the deposit is retained from 7 to 4 days before; 50% applies on the two days before; 100% on the day. For plans without photography, 50% applies only two days, one day before, or on the day. Wherever we can we would rather move your date than cancel, so please talk to us first.
